Introduction
Paperless Pipeline is web-based. There's nothing to download, no app to update, no software to keep current. What matters is your browser, your internet connection, and a light amount of memory on the machine you're using. Clear those three baselines on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, or Linux and Pipeline runs fine.
Most "Pipeline is slow" or "Pipeline looks broken" reports trace back to the same handful of causes: an outdated browser, a full cache, or a weak connection. This Topic covers what Pipeline needs to feel fast, and what to check when something's off.
How It Works
A modest spec. A current browser. A healthy cache. That's the whole picture.
Minimum system requirements
The floor, not the target. Any modern computer or device clears this easily.
- RAM: 2 GB+ on desktops and laptops; 1 GB+ on mobile.
- CPU: 1 GHz or faster.
- Connection: broadband — 4 Mbit/s download or faster, 1 Mbit/s upload or faster.
Supported web browsers
Pipeline supports current versions of:
- Google Chrome — version 49 or higher
- Mozilla Firefox — version 42 or higher
- Microsoft Edge — version 80 or higher
- Safari — version 9 or higher
Keep yours updated for the smoothest experience. Pipeline may stop supporting older versions over time.
Why outdated browsers cause problems
Most display glitches and slow performance trace back to an old browser. Browsers update security patches, rendering engines, and JavaScript performance constantly. Fall behind, and Pipeline's modern code is running on an old runtime.
Safari (macOS and iOS) and Edge are tied to the operating system. Updating those means updating the OS itself. Chrome and Firefox update on their own.
Why a healthy cache matters
Your browser stores Pipeline's files locally to speed up page loads. When that cache gets stale or corrupted, it can keep serving old code instead of the latest, making Pipeline look or behave strangely until you clear it. A hard refresh usually fixes it in seconds.
What slows Pipeline down
A few things consistently make Pipeline feel sluggish:
- Too many unreviewed or unentered docs. More than ~5,000 is a known cause. Review or archive old ones, or ask support to bulk-clear them.
- A weak connection. If other large sites are also slow, the problem isn't Pipeline.
- An outdated browser or full cache. A hard refresh and a clean cache fix most of these.
- A corporate firewall stripping CSS. That makes Pipeline look "broken." It's a network policy, not a Pipeline bug. Your IT team can whitelist Pipeline.
Good to know
- No install. Pipeline is browser-only. "System requirements" really means browser + connection + light RAM.
- Mobile works the same way. Pipeline is responsive on iOS and Android. See Mobile Access for adding a Pipeline icon to your phone's home screen.
- Dark mode is available. Go to Personal Profile → Appearance and pick the Dark Theme if you prefer it. Light is the default.
- Pipeline's Status Page is the place to check if you suspect an outage. Ask support for the link if you don't have it.
- Pick whichever browser you keep most current. Chrome and Firefox auto-update reliably, often the path of least resistance.
Check your browser version
Confirm you're running a supported version of your browser.
Who can do this: Anyone.
- Open your browser.
- Open the About or About [Browser Name] menu — usually under the browser's main menu (the three-dot or three-line icon in a corner).
- Compare the version against the supported list above (Chrome 49+, Firefox 42+, Edge 80+, Safari 9+).
If you're behind, update from the same menu, or update macOS / Windows to bring Safari or Edge along.
Update your browser
Pulls in the latest performance and security fixes. Most Pipeline display or speed problems clear up here.
Who can do this: Anyone.
- Open your browser's menu and look for About [Browser] or Help → About.
- The page checks for an update automatically and starts downloading one if available.
- Click [Relaunch] when prompted. Pipeline picks up the new version on its next page load.
On Mac, Safari updates come from System Settings → General → Software Update. They're bundled with macOS. Edge on Windows works the same way through Windows Update.
Hard refresh and clear your cache
Forces your browser to discard its locally-stored copy of Pipeline's pages and pull fresh ones.
Who can do this: Anyone.
- Hard refresh first. Open Pipeline in your browser, then press Ctrl + Shift + R (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac).
- If that doesn't help, clear the cache. In your browser's settings, find Clear browsing data (or Clear cache), select Cached images and files for the last hour or all time, and confirm.
- Close and reopen the browser fully before trying Pipeline again.
If pages still look wrong, clear cookies as well. Instructions vary by browser. Search your browser's help for "clear cookies."
